Heeey question - spectral again: How often is amantadine used off-label to treat ADHD symptoms?
Depends on the doctor! It's a good daily medication for ADHD that is NOT a stimulant, which is typically first line. There's lots of reasons someone may not want to be on a stimulant, or why a doctor may not want to start a stimulant. In those cases, amantadine can be used! Bupropion is also an option, as are things like guanfacine. Some doctors reach for it more often than others, so it's hard to say how frequent, but it's common enough!
I'm scared to ask anything, even if I know it's anonymous... why am I scared? 🥺
i don't know

maybe it's because you know i am psychic

Is it related to anxiety if I have a problem saying no? To the point that it leaves me over worked.. I personally just like being helpful but I think it’s burning me out :(
possibly! there's lots of reasons why people have issues saying no or holding boundaries, usually something about the act of saying no or enforcing a boundary makes YOU uncomfortable so then you avoid having to do it. I guess my question would be what happens if you aren't helpful? You can't help everyone and still live your own life!
as a professional, how would you diagnose/what would you think about me if I were to sleep from roughly november/december to april/may straight, without breaks? asking for a friend
as a professional cannot make a diagnosis over the internet
as a random internet person that sound concerning (seriously) and makes me experience worry and the sense that you may need additional help and support (possibly of the professional kind).
From a professional standpoint, how would you diagnose me if I constantly feel the urge to smack my boss across the face whenever I walk past him? - Luna :>
yaknow i don't think that's in the dsm5

Is it okay to worry too much? I'm dealing with college and I just managed to pass my first year, and my family and friends had encouraged me this entire year, but I don't know why but I get this immense feeling that I'll fail them. I get knots in my stomach when I think about, and I fidget with my hands to busy myself, still, I can't shake the worry that I will somehow, I'll disappoint them.
Worry is normal, but when you say "too much", I imagine you mean that the amount of worrying is getting in the way of you leading a happy and functional life, in which case, decreasing your level of worry might be worth it!
I would ask what you are worried will happen if you disappoint them? Because the reality is that we are all humans that are inherently flawed, and we WILL mess up and disappoint the people around us eventually, and it seems like that's what's scary??? maybe?
Could be a good thing to talk to a ttherapist about!!! that's what i would say.
Do you have any favorite stories from your time in Psychiatry that made all of med school worth it? (signed: an aspiring med student lol)
Yes! next question
(jkjkjkjkjk)
i can't and won't give specifics but one of the most rewarding things in psychiatry is getting to work with someone over a extended period of time and help them understand themselves, their emotions, their behavior, etc. and through that see them grow as people and begin to take an active hand in their own life and in making their own happiness!
what is the difference between psychiatry, therapy, and psychology?
Psychiatry - typically refers to mental health care and behavioral health care provided by physicians (i.e. MD/DOs). Aka: A psychiatrist is a DOCTOR with a medical license that can prescribe and monitor medications, or provide other interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy or IV ketamine.
Therapy - is the provision of mental health care through non-pharmacological means --- so like talk therapy like psychoanalysis, or skills building type therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy, or group therapy, etc. It's mostly person to person talking and interaction and relationship building and using that to treat mental health issues.
SO a psychiatrist CAN PROVIDE therapy and CAN BE CALLED a therapist, but not all therapists are psychiatrists. Often therapists are psychologists (PsyD or PhD in psychology) or licensed clinical social workers, etc.
Psychology is a general academic term and doesn't necessarily have to do with providing healthcare. There are plenty of psychologists (people with an academic degree in psychology) who do NOT provide therapy (*though of course there are some who do).
