☆ ANNOUNCEMENT INCOMING ☆
sooo, i don't think you're able to really make your own status updates or posts here on revospring hence why i'm resorting to this.
anyways, i'll likely be rewriting or updating my introductory essay for the hatching vogel canon. i think because i was really nervous, i tiptoed around a lot of what i wanted to say and didn't get my points across very well. also it's just not a very well-written essay.
well! time to hit up "politics in the english language" by george orwell once more, i guess! that's always been of great help to me whenever i need to write essays...
we know your top five fav movies in general but what are ur fav horror movies specifically
Would you ever consider writing more dead dove stuff of Bright? The stuff you do have is really good!
thank you! but probably not for the foreseeable future.
long story short as i got more information and context surrounding the real-world creator, i grew less and less comfortable writing the stuff i did. when i tried to return to some older wips i started, i had a bad taste in my mouth. i feel like maybe i might've written the stuff i did because i was trying to vent and "punish" adminbright through the character they created by making THEM the victim to such horrible things. it wasn't as cathartic as i thought it would be—it was the equivalent of punching a pillow while i got stressed, which meant that i'd be more likely to hit something when i got stressed. i realized it wasn't making me feel as better as i thought it might.
i think i sort of pivoted away from that in my more recent fic—i do think on some level my writing bright as a rape survivor IS a very intentional response to his creator's actions; but as opposed to catharsis or "punishing" the character i wanted to create something that indicated, "this is how this kind of trauma impacts a person." and focus on the "fawn" instinct—my VERY deliberate headcanon is that bright's reputation for promiscuity is a fawn response after having been sexually abused for several years in the 1960s by elliott emerson.
to be clear: i'm pro-fic. i think that there is such a thing as legitimate value in darkfic or taboo fiction, and that the safety net of fictional non-consent is important. but i've definitely pivoted in how i portray the dr. bright character because of the real-world context. the reason why i'm more comfortable with taboo fiction involving other characters is because they're usually separate from their creators, and weren't used as author avatars to stealthily broadcast their creator's desires or hurt people. maybe there'll be a time when i feel more comfortable returning to "torture porn" stuff with bright, but i doubt that'll be anytime soon.
dude (can i call you dude) that newer fic abt emerson getting bright pregnant absolutely fucked me up. you're one of the few writers who really kind of emphasizes the inherent body horror and lack of autonomy a person would have in bright's situation (not just from emerson's abuse of him but the bodyhopping in general). seriously felt like throwing up but thats probably what u wanted to achieve so good job
since you like richard donner, have you seen ladyhawke? i feel like that'd make for a good glassbright au...
I get your criticism but also you calling yourself "the world's most livid domesticated rabbit" made me laugh
I NEED your hot takes. Who are your least favorite scp writers in terms of stuff they've written
i have several but i do not care for djkaktus' work. i see him as the michael bay of scp—actually, scratch that, he's like the russo brothers purely in terms of his writing. i feel like he tends to focus a lot on spectacle, and a lot of his more small-scale work—tales or scps—feels a little tryhard. do not ask me to rant about scp-1730 because i will do so for far longer than you'd want to hear about; if you asked me to sum up why i despise it we would have a thesis (hence why i have taken care to painstakingly rewrite it for my hatching vogel canon). a lot of his stuff is just very much not for me—and if we're going to get into my own personal taste when it comes to directors, i much prefer the films of robert eggers and richard donner.
(oh, also! while i do admittedly like the lachlan cairns article on its own and think it is a well-put together, article i dislike it as a rewrite of the jack bright character PURELY because of the goywashing since the character is canonically jewish. i firmly believe it is possible to rewrite an iconic character used as an author avatar by a terrible person without, you know, erasing or ignoring his judaism? actually i've never been fond of the way that a lot of the lore surrounding 963 just... NEVER focuses or addresses his judaism? we're going to goywash them? cool. fine. i am not fuming and furiously thumping my foot about it like the world's most livid domesticated rabbit! i'm totally not!)
as for other authors... ehh, i'm not really comfortable talking about that in detail here since i know some of them have ao3 accounts and write stuff there (this does not, for the record, apply to just one scp author but multiple—i'm not here to vaguepost, i really do mean it). so i don't feel comfortable criticizing their body of work TOO much. i don't want to conflate fanworks that i think deserve immunity from criticism by default (unless the author wants criticism, of course) with works on a wikidot site that treats its works as a serious exercise in creative writing and can be quite harsh with its criticism.
hi, tony tulathimutte comparer here! your most recent fic was really well written but also i'm genuinely hoping that you're doing okay <3
