you know kere i really wanted to say something that was not about garth or my silly hawk & dove but after thinking on this for 3 whole days i have come to the conclusion that i would absolutely go forth and strike out a new hawk&dove volume.
i have spoken a little before on some details regarding how i would want to go forward with hawk&dove in the modern era which would involve bringing them forward in the timeline, possibly to about the 90s or if not the 90s then perhaps the early 2000s instead- thus making them 14/15 in these time periods respectively rather than their original time period which was in the 60's-70's... i would focus somewhat more on the brothers and their interpersonal relationship, establishing what kinds of crowds they associate with and getting some proper reoccurring civilian faces associated with the both of them (something lacking until the 80's run and thus after don's death)
i am unsure how many issues i would want it to be as i feel like there is just so much that could be said and done with them!! the very basic idea of hawk & dove just... i feel it lends itself to a lot of really good stories. perhaps hard stories, messy ones, ones that may make people mad at times, but good stories that would make the reader really think and talk. you know?? which i truly do feel was steve ditko's intention in making them to begin with!! i think i would want at least over 20 issues. i would really want the readers to be able to actually form some attachment to the boys and their supporting cast after all.
i feel as for what kind of comic it would be... hm. at its core, h&d is political in nature. it was made very directly as a result of the US-Vietnam conflict. i think it will always work best as not shying away from its inherently political nature and thus should be the kind of comic that has something meaningful to posit about relevant issues in the world. it CAN work fine with its teeth pulled but i am firm in it being exactly that- pulling the teeth from the maw.
ok this was a lot ahah i hope this was a good answer that made sense!! thank you for such a thought provoking question, kere, i appreciate you <3 <3 <3 <3
duke thomas signal solo run, at least 18-21 issues, artist nikolas draper-ivey (potentially trevor von eeden and brian stelfreeze participation), writer felicia d. henderson because she likes virgil and i trust her to bring him into the story. i'd mostly want it to be leaning towards showcasing the extent of his abilities with different antagonists (maybe a focus on ishmael with some of the street level metas appearances), because i don't think they're used enough in the mainline canon. i'd like it if the conflict touched his (multiple) time related powers. the more lighthearted moments including his nerdiness are an absolute must too, and i want some jason appearances, mostly because of how much they have in common (joker related life altering event, being recruited by batman, coming from a working class family, interest in literature, potentially immortal) and, besides the shipping, i just really like their dynamic. i NEED the immortality shit to be brought up and i need it to be tested. and as much as i wanna see him with a queer love interest, i don't want that to be focused on for too long, just some sidelines non-established stuff for the later issues to give it a chance to keep going and focusing more on it in the next run 🙂↕️ preferably someone who resembles isabella ortiz a lil bit because.. yk, anyway- i'd want it to end with an air of "to be continued" so he can have the opportunity to truly use what he's capable of comfortably and i want some more romance focus on the incoming run 😋
5-10 issues. a descent into a persons most primal urges, someone who is forced into things they never could have imagined in the name of survival.
the art style would start light, barely any shadows, airy colouring expressing the naivety of the main character. the change isnt sudden, its calculated the colours slowly get more desaturated, darker as the mc's fate closes in on them rapidly.
thing is, its not the wilderness that causes this change, the mc is stuck in a populated city, trapped in an apartment complex, they can hear the neighbours but no one seems to care of their anguish and terror as their captor continues to do as they please with the mc. it would end on a panel of the mc, nude, emaciated. long, matted and greasy hair, huddled in a corner with wide fear filled eyes as they pick apart the furniture, eating away at it while the rotting corpse of their captor sits in a wooden rocking chair.
WAAA this is such a good question I don’t have the brain capacity for it. I would like… obviously want a Bernard centered comic run. But that would be not only completely impossible but also sell horribly and ppl would hate it and it would just be bad. So. Instead I want a Tim solo run kinda like if TD:R was actually good… sry. It had good elements but it overall wasn’t very good. All I want is a Tim run with bernard as a main/secondary character so his character can be explored a lot more. I would like it to have a darker tone and I don’t actually want their relationship to be as “picture perfect” as it’s been portrayed for the past couple years. I would like a storyline involving the Cult of Dionysus in some way, and I don’t mind if Bernard has to have a more antagonistic role if it means he gets to be a main character. But I mostly want Tim to grow in his relationship and mess up and work to do better for Bernard’s sake. They will stay together. As long as Bernard gets more obvious development I’ll be happy. As for art I would like any popular artist so that Bernard can look as attractive as possible so people hate him less. Yes that’s a real thing it happened before. My asks aren’t too unrealistic I don’t think… especially if Tim gets any sort of solo run in the near future which I’m hoping for. I want him struggling and I want Bernard to be overtly complex and difficult and loving and beautiful and he always will be to me so as long as he is in a future comic that centers around their relationship developing (and not being sabotaged for no reason) I will die happy. I could be more specific but this is as much as my small brain is allowing…. Bernard… honey….. I love you. I miss you. Come back to me.
fuck ok so ive actually had. a lot of ideas about comics that i would like to exist. i talked about the hard Superboy '94 overhaul in the server i think. yesterday?
i think my dream comic, that being like something that would never exist in a million years, is a sort of 'Miscellaneous Adventures of the Brat Pack' comic. My main complaint with the original series is that the gap of time between issues 4 and 5 is left entirely to the reader's imagination. I don't blame Veitch for this, since there are limits to how many issues you can get for a comic run, let alone one that was more or less entirely independently made in the pre-internet era. He included all of the necessary stuff and it's actually two issues longer than what's described in the pitch bible. The omnibus also includes a scene of the team at a signing event.
But God I want more. I have so many softball questions that aren't plot relevant but matter a lot to me. What was the group dynamic like? What kind of supervillains did they have to fight? I want to see the intricacies of their personalities devolving. I want to see Cody going from uber-narc status to just having to be okay with Karlo and Beau's respective use of recreational and performance-enhancing drugs. I want to know how Shannon felt about getting work done. I want to know if they ever had to care about each other, if there was any real friendship or if it was just proximity. I want to see them fight! What the hell does Chippy even do in a fight? Does he just tank bullets the whole time? Do they have any strategy at all? Is Beau actually racist or just deluding himself into thinking he is? When did Karlo go from beer to crack cocaine?? Just short vignettes! I would be a giddy wreck if I could make that a reality. Maybe even with flashbacks to their family lives? Can we see Ling wiping schmutz off of baby Beau's face?? Even thinking about it makes me really excited.
oooh this is a very good question, I thought abt this very hard... I've talked abt it before but I think its really important to highlight the community that surrounded Jason before he met Batman, he lives in Crime Alley and it no doubt hardened him, but I love to think it was the love of his mother and the care from his neighbors that really cements his goodness and his sense of justice that is fundamentally different from Bruce's. It'd highlight good people, bad people, and just people getting by, as well as all sorts of shit that sticks to you just from growing up poor, but also how things can still be sweet. I'd want to write it myself but maybe with the help of Mark Waid, I rlly like his work in both DC and Marvel, especially surrounding family and complicated relationships and tension. I think with the art It'd be the style/lines of Peack Momoko and the mood/colors of Ashley Wood...
I would make sure Damian and Jon got the continuation they deserve! Damian also got to have his true team, with teammates he actually likes/tolerates and (starts to) trust. Jon, Maya, Suren, Kathy, with Tai Pham eventually joining as well. Everyone is gay, so Damian and Jon get to kiss, Maya and Kathy are in a relationship, and Suren and Tai could figure something out too. I also like the idea with them crossing over with the Teen Justice team, so Damian and Jon could see Talia and Laurel too. But honestly more to have Damian and Jon meet up with Raven and Troy and see themselves in them. And maybe share some sex advices; especially Jon and Troy as they talk about how they open up their tight (in more ways than one) boyfriends
