Esther’s biggest insecurity.. I think before Dae, it was the fact that she was getting older, but before when she was younger her vitiligo along with being a black queer woman in the 80-90s definitely made her feel ostracized even within communities she was a part of.
It took a lot of time but she would eventually embrace herself and all that she is, and used an at first exaggerated confidence, that later on became sincere to boost herself up and make herself unavoidable and irresistible to anyone she wanted.

Dae is something of a mid life crisis, after building up all this genuine confidence in herself and who she is, she is attracted to and connects on some level with a person that is outside her identity! Even after her and Dae break up, she finds herself left questioning everything, more lost than she’s felt in decades. Dae was a whirlwind she wasn’t prepared for.
