what were people fighting for at the start of fandom discourse anyway? were they at least less pearl clutchers back then?
the root of all discourse is someone wanting to make their preferences look objectively correct and their rival/thing they hate look morally wrong. It was that way back then and it's that way now. There are also people who feel like they were harmed by early porn exposure too, and they were calling that "grooming" back then (as in, if you made nsfw of a cartoon network show you were a groomer) which thankfully isn't as common anymore but people still do it. These types that are displacing blame from their abuser onto fanart/fanfiction have always been weaponized by people that don't actually care they just want ammo against whatever they hate.
Moral attack is always the go-to angle now in fandom. It wasn't always like that, it used to just be a petty "my ship is better than your ship" playground argument that no one felt deeply troubled by. Now it's always attacking your moral character. "Oh you like lightcannon? It's because you're a racist."
