Thank u sooooo much for answering my slump question !!! Ur honestly my fav and go-to artist for inspo on stories as well.
I hope u have infinite years of inspiration and art ahead of you!!!!!
🥸 haaiii, can I ask how u find out the shapes for your character designs and backgrounds? Did you have any kind of professional classes or just study a lot during ur free time. I draw and went to college for it but can never find an itch to scratch when it comes to doing anything but retracing old art
oh man shape language has so many aspects to it! I tried answering this a few times and kept finding myself overexplaining art fundamentals. So lemme try and analyze my own process a bit more and hopefully that'll dig up something more specific or helpful. please don't be afraid to ask any clarifying questions you have if my response doesn't fully cover what you were trying to get answers on (I love getting art questions but am not always the best at explaining haha)
So first of all the big thing is to be looking at TONS of other people's art. This is pretty obvious and you probably do this already but still it must be said!! I have big folders of my favorite artists' work and am often doing studies based off of them! How are other people using shapes? what parts of the body/outfit etc. are they exaggerating. It's hard to explain exactly how you do it because I think everyone has a different visual background and is pursuing different goals so there aren't any hard rules. I guess I would think about what sorts of designs speak to you and what aspects of the shape language is helping to pull that off? What do you like to see and why? (i feel like my art answer to anything is always just 'know thyself' LOL but seriously! cultivating strong personal opinions and taste is so important!)
A big part of my shape-language process is simplification! I lean more simple with my designs in general but like... narrowing in on a handful of distinct shapes/features and then letting the rest of a design take a step back can be important. having a base of simple shapes, stepping outside of them in a couple spots but returning to the simple skeleton everywhere else? Like having that really simple under sketch/gesture to follow. Working broad/simple and then fitting details into that framework. Whether that's like setting up basic blocked shapes of a landscape and then adding little whimsical clouds & whatnot or having a character silhouette of simple shapes & then deciding whether to add stripes to their shirt.
Hm yeah as I'm trying to dig into my process the unfortunate answer I'm turning up is that a lot of it (in my personal work & fanart at least) is just sort of intuition developed from really figuring out what I like to look at. Drawing lots of ugly bad shape language and trying to figure out why it doesn't look right.
which is a good transition to the second half of your question about my art education because there were a lottttt of ugly years LOL
I did major in Illustration! I think I had a lot of fundamentals figured out (in my head at least, the actual art was REALLY wack imo) but being forced to meet deadlines & just make a ton of stuff had obvious results. I have also always been pretty compulsive with my drawing (got in trouble for it a lot in middle/highschool)
I totally feel you about that post-school motivation slump though. It's so tough to stay consistent and it's something I definitely struggle with. I can't give you too much advice on drawing more regularly (trying to force a routine has never worked for me) but I would say if you're already sitting down to retrace old art & aren't feeling inspired or like using your brain I would suggest trying to study an artist you admire instead! like just going through and copying hands/eyes/faces you like. I feel like doing that can make me feel more excited about making stuff and even if it doesn't it's still helping train your eyes & hands! You're putting some new stimuli into the machine!
do the warnings you listed ever involve non-adult actors? i want to follow but i'm worried about being jumpscared by smth like that... (i'm so sry if this question is out of pocket)
I'm pretty committed to remaining drama free around here (not going to debate anyone about the morality of drawings LOL) but this ask seems good-faith enough and I was actually wanting to set some boundaries on this sort of stuff anyway so! shrugs
I am someone who always has and always will draw whatever I want! I do think, however, when it comes to real life child actors there is potential harm in posting explicit art of them. I haven't ever drawn anything like that & I won't say I never will privately (if thought crimes bother you please don't follow!) but I can't see myself ever being comfortable posting things like that. I wouldn't want to get any followers/commissioners who were looking for that, i do not want this to be a place where that seems okay to request or discuss. I know my own mind/intentions but can't know the same for strangers on the internet. I am especially not comfortable accepting commissions of this variety! (will be adding this to my commission page)
You won't ever see porn of real child actors from me. I have, however, been known to draw things that could be considered suggestive (drew a request for Garrett from Better Watch Out in boxers a while back and that's about my limit), and I could see myself drawing things on that level (like....PG13 I'd say) again in the future. If you think that might be upsetting please don't follow!!
what was the inspo for your username?
Most simply it’s a combo of pansy (my favorite flower) and periwinkle (a word I like the sound of)!
A couple years back I was in search of a new username, I wanted something that felt like me & was a single word that was easy to say and remember. I used my word list (mentioned previously in that ask about writing tips) and just tried out a bunch of combos of sounds!! I was hoping I could hunt down the sheet and give examples of rejected options for funsies but alas I couldn't find it.
Pansywinkle won out. I like the double meaning of like…timid & wimpy hahahh. And then -winkle is just such a fun sounding suffix, reminds me of twinkle, crinkle etc. i think it sounds cutesy!
is on a tangent now I have this repeated affinity for words that begin with P! Mysterious & intriguing to me hahah. Would have expected L/A/M/J or even S to be preferred. A fun benefit of a favorite word list is observing such things…
the sickly prince and his new maid comm looks so good?? if there was ever a comic or fanfic with that art i would sooooo read it. especially the prince blushing AHHH idk who the creator is but I hope they know it looks like such an interesting concept. your art reeally helped it come to life.
I SEE YOURE A FAN OF MIRACULOUS LADYBUG? Ever plan on drawing any ships or anything about the show in general
I AM!! i think ive watched it 3 times at this point, such a comfort show! im mostly a lovesquare fan though on my last watch through i had some chloe/hawkmoth feelings hmm
it's not out of the question 🤔 i dont have a rewatch planned for a while and thats usually what gets me to draw fanart if something but i have been known to doodle the designs from time to time..
more likely i have this dream of doing lil portraits for all my OTPs to replace the gifs on my ship page and marinette/adrien would be included in that! 🐞
is it ok for long time followers to head over to your priv account? no sore butts if ur not ok with that :::)
I love the contrast of your whimsical style and the sort of unsettling relationships you portray, love your work it’s so unique 💞
ive always taken adopts as a way to financially support artists in creating artworks theyd want to make anyways!! plus it is helpful for adding characters to stories i'd otherwise be unable to make myself either due to lack of skill or just a difference in personal aesthetics :Dc i know some people don't understand the point of them but im passionate about collecting them like toys and playing with them
ooh okay thank u for the perspective 🤔 framing it as toys to collect does make it click a bit more! i could see it being fun to have a lil roster of them available on my comms page, that could be a fun project to try out! and an excuse to make character designs outside of a set context does have its appeals
wouldd you ever consider making/selling adopts ... your creatures are so inspired id love to be able to support you making random critters
