In most of my OCs’ cases, it starts young with small stuff, like running errands as a teen while the gang judges you on street smarts, toughness, and loyalty. To become a real member, you have to be vouched for by someone already inside. After that, your background gets checked for things like cop ties, and you’re made to prove loyalty by committing a serious crime like robbery, murder, etc. If you pass, you’re “jumped in” as a rite of passage. If you endure it, you’re accepted as a low-level member and have to work your way up from there.
