hi! im currently on my first ever read of antichrist which is so interesting so far btw im not sure where i was expecting all this occult stuff to go but i really do like the direction its taken so far. im currently on chapter 10 and dude i am SPOOKED no joke you fucking nailed the horror my god that ritual scene was such a nail biter!! but i do have one question which may or may not be stupid but i just want to make sure i actually know what they are talking about. SPOILERS basically that one convo yj and bg have near the end of the chapter where they talk about how bg needs to step in for tyun but bg is saying that sb wont let him step in bcs he essentially loves him (which ok dark thing to say to yj considering the other 3 people involved are his other bfs who he loves so much too). they like discuss that making sb go through with this ritual would be a lie or a betrayal but i guess where im confused is why would it be lying? like giving him false hope and letting him think that he wont ACTUALLY have to hurt bg? since they dont really know whether or not its ending. this might be a stupid question so apologies! anyways i love your work <3
so what's happening in this scene is yj isn't really saying hey let's lie directly to soob's face, he's saying let's just say whatever we have to say to him to let him feel comfortable initiating the ritual with you, and if that means misleading him and letting him think that we've done enough to disrupt it so that it won't go through to completion, then let's do that. bg sees through this and recognizes that this is in essence just a lie because they have no way of promising that it won't go through to completion and in fact they're 90% sure that it WILL, and bg knows that on the other side of that soobin will suffer emotionally from having done the ritual with bg. he values soob's desires very highly here and doesn't want to do anything that risks hurting him, even if it means missing out on a chance to end the ritual via yj's suggested approach. And yj's values are just in a different place here, he thinks the possibility that they have to lie to soob is worth it because to him, the most important thing is getting bg on that altar and giving him a chance to break the ritual from within.
basically the calculus here is bg values soob's priorities more than taking every chance they have to end the ritual, and yj values taking every chance they have to end the ritual more than soob's priorities. And of course this isn't really Wrong of yj because to him, ending the ritual is obviously the greatest good for all of them, so soobin will be free of his psychic torment and forgive him for misleading him into doing the ritual with bg.
did any of that make sense! its kind of a little clash of philosophies
