Do you like Expressionism? It's an art movement tgat sought to express emotional experience rather than physical reality. It reminded me of how you express intense emotion with your characters in abstract or physically impossible ways.
I'm flattered to be associated with an art movement like that, since I do feel strongly about art as a means to convey the internal, emotional experience, rather than the 'literal' 'physical' reality. I'd argue that art is able to represent things that feel more real than reality...
However, I'll say this plainly, I'm not very properly trained or educated in art history, so I'm only familiar with things in passing. I tend to look into individuals that I happen to come across that interest me, but that rarely intersects with people in history that represent movements. I'd say I'm predominantly interested in amateurs... People on the corner of the internet.
I like to learn and read about all sorts of people. ^^
The only art movement I consciously tried to absorb and internalize, was Impressionism, actually. During high school... I was painting more back then, and was allured by the approach that focused less on exact definition, but capturing the suggestion, interplay of... colors of light on the surface of water, blur of grass and trees. I'm not good with high detail, so I remember thinking, I want to be able to convey something without literally needing to carve out every aspect of a window or door in a building... yknow.
By now, I feel like the philosophy that goes into other mediums also really helps influence my work. Like observing sculpture, puppetry, needlefelting... Anyhow, just a ramble about how I go about digesting inspiration. I feel umm unprofessional and a bit under motivated to learn about history, but I don't want to sound off-putting, I just mean to clarify... because I don't want to give an impression that I'm more informed than I am. 💦
Even so, again, I'm glad the intention of my art can link back to this thesis...!! I want that to ooze through everything, even if the subject is a cute little creature. I want the depth of emotions to be so great that the world has to contort to house it... Some of my favorite pieces to make (and that I still enjoy to look at) are where there's a lot of overlaying of expressions and body parts, as if multiple feelings are converging, flowing into one another. A scowl and a grin and a pursed lip, a squint and a glare and an eye rolling back. Bursting and folding back in. A single moment can hold too much, it's impossible to say or show it all...
