no expert on this but i only specify training your internals because thats what helps me personally with efficiency and quality the most. you can still be an amazing artist without direct independent visualization! if u want to improve your form without that u can try stuff like synthesizing several references ie. a 3d model pose + a lighting reference + a face shape reference. practice and training your mind and hands are really the only ways to improve regardless of their form.
