From my interpretation, Mark is saying he had a shallow way of thinking/ acting that was normalized by the environment (industry) he surrounded himself with. However, he no longer found joy in it, because he had an awakening—likely through Christ.
If he meant something else he failed to relay it
i also think that's the message and my problem isn't really that, it's just this kind of discourse religion and religious people have when they decide to devout themselves entirely to god or whatever. like the only real, true happiness is the one they're living because it was created by god and everyone else is secretly unhappy or doomed to unhappiness... justifying it by saying it happens because they live shallow lives. do you get what i mean? i feel like i'm struggling to explain what i mean but that's basically it.
