I'm a big fan of your work, and I love how you structure your stories. Any advice/insight into your process for structuring stories to keep a good balance between pacing and imagery/emotional insight?
PS: You're currently my favorite author besides MXTX herself :) Thank you for posting so much amazing content.
Oh my gosh this is one of the nicest messages ever??? Thank you so much 😭
Structure really depends on the story for me. Generally, my ideas start with a little moment and I build off of that. With oneshots, there aren't generally very many more moments to build around it, so I will often just have a vague idea of the start, middle, and end of the story and I'll just go for it. For longer stories, I will write out a dot point outline of all the things I want to have in the story and the basic order of things, just to make sure I don't forget, but the outline is always something pretty open. If the boys want to go off on a tangent, I won't stop them. I think that's probably the most important thing in regard to imagery/emotional insight. I let the boys ramble. I let them have their inner monologues and their minor breakdowns. And this can all happen while story beats are happening in order to keep the momentum of the story going, but I think it's really important that they have that time to internally voice what they're going through. Otherwise, it's harder to empathise, I think.
Honestly, a lot of my writing is being aware of what I want from the scene, but letting the boys guide me through it. Did I want them to kiss there? No, but did they decide that was a necessary addition? Absolutely, and who am I to say no?
I also will write a lot of dialogue beats out ahead of time. I find that dialogue for scenes will come to me long before I get there, so I write them out so I won't forget. With my current WIP, I have four dialogue strings sitting in my notes to be used. But yeah I guess I'm mostly a vibes kind of writer. I follow where the vibes take me.
